This lionfish was done for the WDE on WetCanvas from a photo reference by "mbeckett." Mike had such great photos it was hard to decide which ones to do. I did the grapes below and this one. This is 7.5 x 11 in watercolors.

About Me
- Joan
- I have always participated in the visual arts including watercolors, drawing and sketching, pen and ink, and photography. Since retiring from teaching I have devoted much of my time to watercolors, sometimes combining them with pen and ink or collage. Watercolor is the perfect medium to capture the beauty that surrounds us. I love to travel, and sketch and paint wherever I go. Painting, especially on location, captures the spirit and life of the subject. I hope to continue doing that for a long time to come.

Fantastic! However do you manage to get such an even dark-coloured wash like the one you've used for the background?

Mithila - Thanks! I did several layers of a dark mix of alizerin crimson and veridian until it looked almost black.
this is terrific! I wanted to be a marine biologist once...and this was one of my favorite fish! nicely done...hope all is well!
