Effingham, Illinois

Here is a bit of foliage outside the Hampton Inn in Effingham, Illinois where we stopped going to and from Wichita last week. By the time we arrived at the hotel, I was too tired of being in the car to drive and look for something more scenic. This is in my November journal of paintings done without preliminary pencil lines.

In Memory of John Michael Regan
IN MEMORY OF JOHN MICHAEL REGAN 1953-2010
I was on the road this past week traveling to Wichita, Kansas. Why Wichita you ask? We attended a memorial service for my husband's cousin, John Regan, who died recently in a hiking accident in Colorado. This is the last photo of John taken by another hiker at the summit of the mountain. On the way down, John slipped and fell 300 feet. Many family members, friends, and collegues joined us at the service and later at the home of his widow, Dian, to share their memories of John. He will be missed. This photo makes me think that he had only one more step until he reached heaven.

Railroad Crossing

I must have passed this spot a million times. I really wanted to paint it with the autumn colors, but finding a spot to sit and paint it was a challenge. It has been too cold to sit outside, and this spot is just across from the Sayville train station, so parking is almost impossible...except for the weekend! This is 4 x 6 done in watercolors and ink.

Charlotte

This painting was done in plein air at the Maritime Museum in Sayville, NY. I started it one night with the Patchogue Sketch Club. Of course I didn't get to finish it the first night because it got too dark to early to see what I was looking at and painting. I returned the next morning to complete it. Yes, the lighting was different, but I was able to see the aging parts much better. This is 7 x 10 and is presently hanging in Patchogue as part of the Patchogue "Walking Arts Tour."

Longwood Estate Red Barn

My Tuesday plein air group selected Longwood Estate, in Ridge, NY for our last two painting days. There are several buildings on the site, as well as a pond so there is a lot to paint. I did this one of the red barn with the autumn colors this week. This is 8 x 10. I returned to this spot again yesterday and will post that painting after a few touch ups.

Patchogue Theatre

This past year I joined two local plein air groups. This painting of the Patchogue Theatre was done last week when I went out with the Patchogue Sketch Club on a Wednesday evening. Our location was right on the main street in the town of Patchogue. We were interviewed by the Patchogue Patch a few weeks ago at one of our sketch sites and here is a link to the article. It shows my hands working on a sketch and then I am in a few of the other photos.

Expresso & Canal Reflections

These are the last of my paintings from Venice. The top one, "Expresso" is another painting I did one evening in our apartment. Some nights I was too tired to go out and walk around, so I set up a still life. These items are so typical Italy. I don't drink expresso, but I do love the pots and that colorful expresso can couldn't be resisted. I'm still trying to decide if I should do a background or a cloth underneath the objects. My husband keeps telling me to leave it as is...I'm not so sure.
The bottom one is the only larger painting from outdoors that I did while I was away...and it is only 6 x 8.
So for now I have to say, "Ciao Venezia!"

Jo's Garden - SOLD

I like being able to attach that word "SOLD"to the title. lol This was done back in September at the home of a friend of one of my sketching friends. This is Jo's garden, filled with all kinds of shrubs, but not too many flowers. When I was working on it, Jo asked if I sell my paintings and said she was interested in buying it. I told her I would take finish it and then bring it to her to see. Of course I procrastinated a bit and just brought it to her this weekend. She loved it! The painting is 8 x 10.
