Worldwide Sketchcrawl #19 - June 20, 2008

My sister, Michelle and I did the Worldwide Sketchcrawl on Saturday, June 20. We went to Van Saun Park in Bergen County, NJ. Our sketching started with the Bergen County Millennium Carousel which has assorted animals, not just horses. It was fun to sketch, but the carousel isn't designed for artists who are sitting there trying to sketch or paint. It doesn't stop with the same animal in front of you each time, so we kept moving each time the carousel stopped. I got to do one traditional carousel horse and a lion. Next we headed into the zoo, looking for the slower-moving animals to sketch. I did get to do the Greater Rhea (which looks like an ostrich), some Red-Footed Tortoises, an American Alligator, a Great Blue Heron, an American Bison (mine looks like a large furry rodent to me), and some American Elk. We finished up with a trip back to the carousel to do another animal. I picked the camel and finished it just in time because they shut the carousel down promply at 5. Once they put down the solid metal gates you couldn't see anything. All in all, it was a fun day of sketching!

We did have a lot of fun, didn't we!

You got a lot done on that first little painting of the carousel. It's perfect! I like looking into the mouth of your lion also. I loved sketching the carousel. So many different animals and decorations - could have kept us busy for a month.

Great job. I really like the carousel ones. If I was a kid I think that lion would have scared me to sit on it. My favorite it the camel. Glad you got that one in.

Mickey - Thanks. We'll have to go back and do the carousel again.

Jo - We really had a good time doing the carousel.I think it was very different for both of us.

Jeanne - Thanks. That lion was scary. They had so many great animals on the carousel that it was hard to pick just a few to do.

Lin - Thank you.We didn't really have to sketch that fast.We waited for it to stop moving and then sketched. While it was moving I just worked on refining the sketch. The hard part was scooting over to where that animal was when it stopped again.

Helen, Thanks. The sketchcrawls are a lot of fun, especially if you have someone to sketch with.

What fun to imagine you sketching on the run, Joan. It's a real challenge and I wish I had the courage to do it more often.

I love the carousel animals too but your tortoises are my favourites.

Robyn, Thanks. You should try the sketchcrawl the next time. I would love to see Tuscan sketched throughout your day!

Anita - Thanks. It was a busy day of sketching, but time flies when you're doing it with someone else.
