This is the first larger painting of the beach dunes that I've done. It is 11 x 15. I used some of my smaller beach paintings as references for this one.
I very much like the way the foliage leads the eye through the painting. The colours are lovely and I'm thinking maybe it is a mild temperature painting - meaning spring or autumn - not hot, not cold.
Tracy - I haven't been near the beach since early October, and I'm feeling it calling. I'll have to get there this week, even if the weather is cold. Glad you like this.
Jo - Thanks. I had done quite a few small dune paintings this summer. This is the first (but I'm sure not the last) larger one.
Marcia - Thank you. It's funny that with all the time I spend at the beach, I don't remember seeing these yellow flowers in such abundance before. I think they just come out in the fall, so I'll have to be on the lookout next year.
I have always participated in the visual arts including watercolors, drawing and sketching, pen and ink, and photography. Since retiring from teaching I have devoted much of my time to watercolors, sometimes combining them with pen and ink or collage.
Watercolor is the perfect medium to capture the beauty that surrounds us. I love to travel, and sketch and paint wherever I go. Painting, especially on location, captures the spirit and life of the subject. I hope to continue doing that for a long time to come.

Thanks, Wendy. This was done mostly from a smaller painting I had done in late September.
Oh to be on the beach...even in late September!! Instead I'm here freezing my...oh! And a very lovely painting it is!! Merry Happy, Joan!!
Nice, Joan. I like how the fence is spaced and has an open feeling to welcome the viewer. :)
I love this Joan. So fresh and inviting. Beautiful yellow flowering plants! Great job!

This is beautiful! I love the shadows. I think they really add life to the painting.
