Workshop Paintings - Day 3

Day 3 of our class with Jerry Brommer focused on the mood of the painting. We selected our reference, did 4 sketches, and then did paintings from 2 of the sketches. We came up with 3 visual adjectives to describe each painting we were working on. When each painting was finished we wrote the adjectives on the back. Later as the class walked around to view the paintings, they would check to see if the painting captured those words. For the first painting (Approaching Storm), my adjectives were ominous, cloudy, and grey. For the second painting (Marsh Sunrise) my adjectives were serene, clear, and open. This painting assignment definitely showed us the different emotional impact paintings have and the mood each gives.

Workshop Paintings - Day 2

During the second day of the workshop we used our own references to find 4 or 5 elements we wanted to use in our paintings. Then we did at least 4 sketches using those elements. The aim was to rearrange the elements for each painting, making each part more/less dominant by moving it to the back or front of the painting or to a different spot in the painting, changing the colors, etc. Using the same subject there is an incredible number of possible paintings based on these changes. (So much for not having anything to paint!) Both of these painting were done from elements in 2 photos I had taken in Maine.

Workshop Paintings - Day 1

I just finished taking a watercolor workshop with Gerald Brommer on content and emotion. The first day of the class he had us do 5 minute sketches of 12 landscape slides. We picked on of our sketches and did 2 paintings of the exact same scene. One painting was done as a high key (light valued) painting and one was done as a low key (dark valued painting). I definitely showed how the values change the emotion of a painting.Thursday, February 28, 2008

Chianti Vineyard - ATC
This is another ATC (2.5 x 3.5) that I did for the WetCanvas project. It was done in ink and watercolor from my photos taken in Italy. I was driving and saw this colorful building and had to stop to take photos. Most of the buildings in the area were beige and tan stone buildings, so the color of this one really stood out.

Maine Barn in Snow
This is my first larger (11 x 14) painting for 2008. It was done from a reference photo I took in Maine over Christmas. I love the rustic, peeling effect of the red barn against the white of the snow. The barn belongs to my sister and her husband. They've done a lot of work on the inside of the barn, so I figured I'd better do a painting of it before they get around to repainting the outside.Wednesday, January 9, 2008

Tuscan View ATC
This ATC (2.5 x 3.5) was sent to Meimei from WetCanvas as part of our project. I used several of my photos of Tuscany to incorporate the yellow flowers, the background hills, the vineyard, and the villa into one painting. I wanted to make sure it was a bit different from the larger paintings of Tuscany that I've done, which are here in the older posts.

Cobbler in the Future

Can you believe that this was done with the exact same colors as the "Regal Rooster" below? This 11 x 14 watercolor was also done for the "Toucan Challenge" on WetCanvas. The reference photo was taken at my favorite farm stand on the north fork of Long Island. I loved all the apple baskets on the tables.

Manorola View - ATC
I am participating in a project in WetCanvas where we are painting ATCs (artists' trading cards) and sending an original card to each of the 19 people who signed up for the project. The ATCs are tiny, real tiny (2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches), and are very different to paint. I am doing paintings of places that I've visited. This one is done in ink and watercolor of the small town of Manorola in Italy's Cinque Terre.Saturday, December 29, 2007

Autumn Arrival
My sister, Mickey, and I went up to Kent, Connecticut to see the Northeast Watercolor Society's International Show. We always try to paint something while we are up there, but the weather is either cold or rainy. I started this 4 x 6 while sitting on a bench in the park, but finished it inside my car. It was much too cold outside for plein air. The park has some lovely views and a waterfall. I'm sure we'll be back up there to paint again.Friday, November 30, 2007

Joe's Opera Rehearsal

OK, it isn't a watercolor, but it was something that was part of the trip to Germany. My nephew, Joe, has a position singing with the Dusseldorf Opera Company. We didn't get to see him perform while we were there, but we did sit in on one of his rehearsals. I did a sketch of him and his piano player.

The Boys

When we were in Germany it was too cold to paint outdoors. So I decided I needed to paint from inside Joe & Kathleen's apartment (my nephew & his wife). These 3 are their "boys"...Cooper, Mouth, and Bear. The dogs were out on the balcony looking through the window of the kitchen door.It is my first dog portrait and is 4 x 6. I gave it to Joe & Kathleen before I left.
